The editorial verdict

The ownership case.

KR174 offers meaningful cutting-system and capacity changes over KR173. It remains a maintenance mower whose large-area usefulness depends on scheduling, terrain and the correction network, rather than on the maximum acreage alone.

Reasons to consider it

  • Larger 6 Ah battery
  • Double-layer six-blade cutting system
  • Recommended 1.2-acre working scenario

Go in knowing

  • 1.7-acre maximum uses a 72-hour interval
  • Not an AWD steep-terrain specialist
  • Network and local service need confirmation

01 / THE DETAILS

A larger Kress with a different cutting assembly

KR174 is more than the same machine with a larger acreage label. The Canadian specification lists a 6 Ah battery, an approximately 8.66-inch cutting width and a six-blade double-layer arrangement. Kress promotes that blade system for denser grass. We would treat the claim as a reason to test load handling, not as evidence that the robot can routinely replace a conventional mower for reclaiming overgrown ground.

Capacity is again tied to frequency: 1.2 acres recommended on a 48-hour cycle and 1.7 acres maximum on a 72-hour cycle. That distinction helps an owner decide whether the system has room for weather delays and use of the lawn. An estate that must look freshly maintained every day should not be sized from the least frequent mowing scenario.

02 / THE DETAILS

The network approach can simplify a large site

Network RTK avoids a property-specific stationary reference antenna in the stated Kress installation concept. On a large property, that may reduce infrastructure and provide a cleaner installation. The dealer still needs to assess coverage across the actual work areas. A good result near the front of the property does not establish reliable operation behind buildings or along a tree-lined back boundary.

OAS obstacle avoidance and dead reckoning are listed as supporting features. We would evaluate them as parts of a complete route, including recovery after an obstacle blocks a normal passage. The mower must both preserve safe boundaries and return to useful work. A robot that stops safely but requires frequent rescue can still be a poor match for a remote corner of a large lawn.

03 / THE DETAILS

The extra capacity should reduce owner workload

Electronic height adjustment and a floating deck can simplify management, but the 40% slope limit remains important. This is not automatically the right mower for steep acreage just because it is the larger residential Kress. Survey the most difficult banks and turning margins before comparing battery sizes. A smaller area with severe terrain can need a different chassis rather than a larger pack.

Against KR173, the KR174 premium should buy useful schedule margin or demonstrably better cutting under the owner's grass conditions. We would measure finish quality, power-related interruptions and how much material accumulates around the double-layer cutting system. More cutting parts may also change inspection and replacement work, so obtain the exact consumable costs. A local service plan is especially valuable when one machine maintains a large lawn. Until a representative operating period is completed, the research verdict is that KR174 is a substantial candidate with clear conditions, not a proven substitute for every ride-on mower.

04 / THE DETAILS

A practical acceptance test before relying on it

A useful KR174 acceptance plan compares the finish in ordinary grass with a safely managed denser section at the same approved height. Record interruptions, missed material and subsequent cleaning of the double-layer cutting system. The extra blades and battery should demonstrate a practical benefit beyond the headline acreage. We would also verify that the chosen mowing interval leaves room for weather and garden use, then test the longest trip back to the station. An estate buyer should obtain written repair and transport arrangements before depending on one machine. This turns a technically attractive larger Kress into a concrete ownership proposition whose limitations are understood.

05 / THE DETAILS

Setup, maintenance and the ownership decision

The KR174's double-layer six-blade assembly should receive its own maintenance demonstration. Ask the dealer to show safe access, correct replacement parts and the inspection points after contacting debris. More cutting elements may change the work involved in keeping the assembly clean and balanced. We would watch for differences in finish before assuming a positioning problem is responsible for uneven grass. The documented design is intended to address demanding cutting, but its practical value must include the cleaning and consumable cost that comes with it. A larger specification should not make routine care an afterthought.

The 6 Ah battery and recommended 1.2-acre 48-hour scenario can provide useful schedule capacity, while the 1.7-acre maximum belongs to a 72-hour interval. Decide which finish and frequency the property needs before accepting a coverage plan. Long transport paths and many landscaped islands consume useful time. Place the charging station to serve the work rather than simply to disappear from view. We would leave room for weather delays and days when parts of the lawn are occupied. An estate robot that works at its limit continuously can be much less convenient than one with modest spare capacity.

Network RTK avoids property-specific stationary antenna hardware in the stated installation concept, but it does not eliminate an external dependency. Have the dealer verify service and reception across the actual site, including behind buildings and along mature trees. The listed dead-reckoning support should be tested through those transitions rather than treated as a guarantee that shade is irrelevant. Map transport paths around the property's normal traffic and gate use. OAS can help with changing obstacles, yet it cannot open a gate or guarantee safe interaction with every object, animal or person encountered on a large working area.

The electronic height control and app are useful management tools when several areas have different needs. Keep the map and schedules understandable to the person who will actually manage them, and review who retains account access after professional installation. Confirm 4G and network service terms and the process for recovering control after a phone change. We did not audit the software's privacy or reliability. Use local stopping controls and physical safeguards as part of the operating plan. The 40% slope limit also confirms that larger area capacity should not be confused with a specialist steep-terrain chassis.

Ask the dealer to price battery replacement, cutting consumables and collection for major repairs. A large lawn may need conventional backup mowing while a shared repair resource is busy, and that cost belongs in the ownership estimate. The Canadian product page does not guarantee any particular retailer's stock or service response. Compare KR174 with KR173 using the work the larger assembly and battery actually save. If the lawn already fits comfortably within KR173's schedule, the premium may be unnecessary. If the larger machine creates meaningful margin with an acceptable finish, it can be a rational choice supported by a clear local service arrangement.

06 / THE DETAILS

Seasonal storage and return to work

KR174's spring preparation should inspect the double-layer cutting system using the dealer's demonstrated procedure and the correct replacement components. Record the preferred electronic height and the intended 48-hour interval before storage. Recheck large-property transport routes and correction coverage where buildings or planting have changed. Follow the exact battery instructions and confirm a complete distant return before scheduling every area. Seasonal planning is particularly valuable when one robot maintains substantial acreage, because an overlooked obstruction or service issue can create a larger backlog than on a compact lawn.
