The editorial verdict

The ownership case.

A credible used option for listeners who enjoy its optional processing and can verify fit, battery health and compatibility with their own source devices.

Reasons to consider it

  • CustomTune calibration and selectable immersive modes
  • Hybrid physical and touch controls
  • Folding design with an analogue input

Go in knowing

  • Immersive Audio reduces the manufacturer runtime claim
  • Later Ultra specifications do not apply to this generation
  • Advanced wireless modes require compatible source devices

01 / THE DETAILS

Identify the first Ultra correctly

This review concerns the original QuietComfort Ultra Headphones introduced in 2023. That qualification is essential when shopping older stock: a photograph of a familiar Bose silhouette does not establish the generation, and a newer model's specifications should not be transferred to this one. Ask for the exact product identity and compare the charging and control descriptions with the linked original documentation. A vague listing headed simply “Bose Ultra” leaves too much unresolved for an expensive purchase.

The attraction here is a combination of conventional over-ear listening and more elaborate processing options. That combination can suit someone who wants one headphone for an office, a flight and watching films on a tablet. It also creates more decisions than the Bose name alone suggests. Consider which features you will actually enable, how much time you will spend wearing the headphones and whether a cheaper documented alternative already covers those uses. Paying for processing that you consistently switch off offers little practical return.

02 / THE DETAILS

Immersive Audio is an optional presentation

Bose provides Still and Motion versions of Immersive Audio. The distinction is about the intended relationship between the apparent sound and your movement, not about the underlying recording suddenly acquiring a new physical set of speakers. It is worth trying both with spoken dialogue and with music you know well. A treatment that makes a concert recording enjoyable may be less suitable for a tightly centred voice or for work that requires judging the original mix.

Do not evaluate this feature solely during a brief demonstration designed to show it off. Switch it off, match the perceived level as closely as practical and return to the same passage. Then decide whether you prefer the result enough to use it routinely. The option is valuable because it is optional. A buyer who dislikes the effect can still assess the headphone on its other capabilities; a buyer who loves it should include its effect on battery planning in the purchase decision.

03 / THE DETAILS

Calibration cannot decide comfort for you

CustomTune is Bose's documented ear-related audio calibration system. It gives the design a way to adapt its processing, but it does not remove the importance of a stable physical fit. Hair, glasses and the angle of the cups still affect how the headphones sit. An automatic procedure should therefore be treated as one part of the listening system rather than as a promise that every head shape will obtain the same result.

Spend time checking the headband adjustment and the pressure around the jaw. A used pair may have different cushion compression on the two sides, especially if it has often hung from one cup or been packed carelessly. That can make the fit feel uneven even when the electronics are functioning. Replacement cushions may be a sensible part of a purchase, but confirm their exact compatibility and cost first. The ability to improve a worn contact surface is useful; having to improvise parts immediately is a different proposition.

Controls combine a strip and buttons

The original Ultra mixes a capacitive volume strip with physical controls for power, pairing and other functions. This hybrid arrangement deserves a practical trial because volume is one of the actions repeated most often. See whether you can locate the strip without looking and whether the amount of finger movement feels predictable. If you frequently listen while wearing gloves, include that in the assessment rather than assuming the controls will behave as bare-finger demonstrations suggest.

The folding arrangement also changes the ownership experience. Pack the headphone in its intended case, take it out and repeat the operation several times. That reveals whether the movement feels natural and whether an older hinge has become loose or stiff. A storage case is not an incidental accessory on a headphone that travels regularly: it supports a repeatable way to protect the cups and joints. A listing without one should be compared at the cost of a suitable complete travel setup.

05 / THE DETAILS

Wireless compatibility has conditions

The launch documentation lists Bluetooth 5.3 and Snapdragon Sound with aptX Adaptive support. Those names describe capabilities within a compatible chain, not a guarantee that every phone will use the same transmission mode. An iPhone, a particular Android handset and a work laptop may negotiate different connections. Establish the behaviour of your own source before paying extra for a codec label that might never be active in your routine.

For calls, the source device and application remain part of the result. Make a sample recording or a short conversation through the exact computer you intend to use. Noise reduction on the microphone path is a separate question from cancellation heard by the wearer, and a strong impression of personal quiet does not establish what another participant hears. If switching between devices is important, inspect the current supported firmware and test the sequence yourself. The original release is a useful hardware reference, but software behaviour should be checked in its present form.

06 / THE DETAILS

Wired listening needs a deliberate plan

The original model includes a 2.5 mm analogue connection and a USB-C charging port. Keep those roles distinct when planning a desk or aircraft setup. A USB-C socket by itself is not evidence that a headphone accepts digital USB audio, and specifications for later Ultra generations should not be used to fill that gap. Check the original owner's guide for the exact wired arrangement and the cable required for your source.

This matters most when wireless listening is inconvenient or unavailable. An aircraft system, an audio interface and a game controller present different sockets and operating expectations. Lay out the complete chain before travelling: source, any adapter, cable and headphones. Test it while you still have an easy alternative available. A premium wireless product can still be the wrong wired solution if it introduces a connector or power requirement you had not allowed for. That is a compatibility issue, not a judgment about the music it can reproduce.

Runtime changes with the mode

Bose's original claim is up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off and 18 hours with it on. The difference makes feature selection part of battery management. A listener who consistently uses the spatial treatment should plan around the relevant claim rather than the largest number in a sales listing. An older battery adds another uncertainty, so leave reserve for a delayed journey or a day when charging is inconvenient.

Observe charging and idle behaviour as well as active playback when evaluating a used pair. An unreliable socket can be more disruptive than a modest reduction in maximum runtime because it makes overnight charging uncertain. Inspect the cable fit and verify that charging continues without holding the connector in a particular position. A remaining-battery announcement after ten minutes tells you little about a full day's use. A return window that permits normal daily listening is far more informative than a seller's assurance that the battery is “fine.”

08 / THE DETAILS

A considered upgrade for the right listener

The original Ultra has a persuasive documented feature set for someone who likes Bose's fit and wants to experiment with immersive presentation. Its value is less obvious for a listener who only needs ordinary music playback and rarely changes modes. The practical difference should be demonstrated with your own content, not inferred from the word Ultra. Comfort, control preference and reliable interaction with your devices deserve at least as much weight as the feature checklist.

Buying used can make sense when the generation is unambiguous, the cushions and hinges are healthy, and the cost leaves room for future servicing. Check support availability in Canada or the US for the actual unit rather than assuming an imported bargain follows the same service route. Our score is provisional and based on the documented capabilities and ownership tradeoffs. It does not certify cancellation strength, call quality or durability. A successful purchase is the pair that works predictably in your routine, with its optional processing earning its place through use.
